Well today I pull into a KFC to go to the drivein and I see two guys talking next to a black van. I see a box on the ground at it looks like speakers. I pull over and wait to see if what I think is happening is actually happening. I see this guy talking a lot and I think that if I can get the other guy's attention I will try to warn him. Then white van guy who has been doing all the talking picks up the box and puts it in the back of the other guys truck and starts to point out directions to the ATM.

I then go up to the guy that is going to be scammed and try to tell him that he is being scammed. White van guy says that there is no scam ...this is good stuff. I say "google "White van speaker scan" and you will find out all about it." White van guy says ...."hey we don't have a white van...ours is black". I then say to the guy being scammed " did they tell you that these were just stuff put on their van today by mistake and they have to get rid of them before going back to the shop". The white van guy says "Yeah, that's what happened"

I then walk away and tell the guy "don't do it...it is a scam"....but I can see in his eyes he believes what these guys have said and doesn't want to pass up on a $1,000 system that these guys are going to sell to him for $400.00.

They say that many good cons take advantage of fact that many people are dishonest and have no problem buying stolen property if they think that they are getting a good price.

Good for you, speaking up and warning the guy.

First, good for you. How these idiots still run this scam is amazing.

your response should have been to the guy in the van - Sir, you are either a lier or a thief, hmm perhaps both. Which is it?
to the victim - if its stolen merchandise as he is claiming, than you are committing a crime as well.

then you should simply call the police in front of them and report them both while giving a description of them and their license plate numbers.

People are greedy. That's the bottom line. Scams that play on people's greediness are usually very successful. You could tell people that you had a truckful of STOLEN ipads. 99.999999999% of people would purchase one, even being told they were stolen.

Best thing to do is tell them to google the product make/model. There are plenty of posts from other victims who googled the make and model when they got home and realized their great deal was really just a scam.

I can't believe these guys are still in business now that people walk around with internet access in their pockets.

The only thing that exceeds peoples greed, is their stupidity!

People think, I'm not stealing from anyone, it is a big company. Problem is, that big company is able to employ fewer people when they make less money. People justify this and think nothing of it. Software and music are common thefts, as it is easy, and people don't think they are hurting anyone. Why do I think they'd pass up a set of speakers.

When I went up to the white van guys(there was two of them) my intention was to warn the guy that was being scammed. I am a 6'1" guy and don't back down when pushed but my intention was to warn the guy not to get into a fight with two guys when their scam was exposed.

It would not have done any good to call the cops because we all know that this stuff is not "stolen" it is just crap that they are saying is high priced gear. As far as I know this is not illegal and no laws are being broken. I am sure the cops have little sympathy for the person scammed who claims that the stuff that they thought was "stolen" was actually crap.

Like I said in my original post that I really think that the guy was being scammed was still going to buy the stuff. I could see in his eyes that he thought that this stuff was too good to pass up.

Same goes for insurance companies and 'sticking it to the man'. People just don't think or realize that insurance is just a business... loose a lot of money in court one year, well, we'll just raise everyone's premiums the next year.
Like that McDonald's case, or many, many others.

Problem with insurance companies is that unlike other businesses where you get what you pay for...their SOP is to deny claims and push the burden back to the customer. If/When they do pay out they raise rates for all clients. It would be like you taking a clients deposit and then telling them "NOPE not getting DirecTV" until they take you to court where you will be (or not) forced to provide them with what they paid for.

The McDonalds case is a great example of companies, their insurance coverage and lawyers playing russian roulette with human life. A little old lady got burned because of a known faulty product and wanted her medical expenses covered. She was denied and had to sue. The real story about the so called 'frivolous coffee lawsuit'. I once heard that 90% of the money made in America is made by Insurance Companies.  I don't know if it's true or not, but it sure seems like they're doing their part on my bank account.

My favorite part of the OP story is...."We're in a black van".
They didn't say "This isn't a scam".  They just said, "Nope, black van".

I had a guy call me today and asked if we could install his new projector and screen.  I asked what kind it was.  He said it was a Napali.  I couldn't help myself, the next thing that came out of my mouth was.  "Did you buy this from a guy in a van?".

He said no.  I bought it from my cousins friend.

I said, I've never heard of it, so not really interested in installing it.  I looked it up.  Check out how they spelled BluE Ray.  Bwahaha.

NAPALI? WTF? You can get a pretty good 1080p projector these days for less than $1000. If that person paid $200 for that thing, he got ripped off. Hopefully this thread comes up in google searches for NAPALI PROJECTOR now.
